Canoe pulling is a practice that is central to our culture and we want to preserve our skills at canoe and paddle making as well as canoe racing. Canoe racing has been important to our culture for thousands of years. Traditionally, our nation built canoes by using whole logs. However for the last 25 years with changing technology, we can build our racing canoes out of fiber glass. The canoes are lighter and easier to repair.
We have had our own canoe club going for over 60 years and have successfully competed in various war canoe races throughout Vancouver Island, on the mainland and at various villages in the United States.
The Malahat Canoe Club has had many successful years in competition but lately, there had been less less interest in the sport. Malahat wants to encourage our youth to participate in war canoe races and, with their involvement, we hope to have another successful team on the water in the near future.
